Jamaica was discovered by Spain after Columbus had reached in 1494. Columbus used it as private property of his family. The British conquered it in 1670. During the first 200 years of British rule, Jamaica became the largest exporter of sugar, which was achieved through massive use of African slave labor.
The overzealous use of slaves in the British turned against them, and in the early nineteenth century the number of blacks was nearly 20 times greater than that of whites. There followed a series of revolts and in 1838, slavery was formally abolished.
Over the years that followed, the degree of autonomy in Jamaica has increased and in 1958, Jamaica became a province of an independent nation called the Federation of the West Indies. Jamaica left the federation in 1962 and is now a completely sovereign nation.
Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to a state of endemic violence and the drop in tourism.
One of the ancient capitals of Jamaica include Port Royal, where he held sway governor and later the pirate Henry Morgan. It was destroyed by a storm and an earthquake, and Spanish Town in St. Catherine parish, which was the site of the old Spanish colonial capital and the English capital during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
